Penjing - Chinese Bonsai

I am experimenting with sculpting paper roots for Penjing - Chinese version of Bonsai. Below are three pieces that I am working on...one is celluclay on a wire armature, the other is a piece of mopani wood from Africa and the third is a piece of found driftwood. The celluclay on the mopani allows the wood to stand at an angle and the Fulkien Tea bonsai tree will be planted in the back pocket that was created. This wood is placed on a Penjing oval pan and a landscape is created with bonsai trees, moss, gravel and other pieces of wood... Penjing has less rigid rules than Bosai, but bonsai trees are incorporated in the Penjing landscapes.

Drainage valves are kept open with bbq skewers to block any debris from clogging them...

A pocket has been created at the back of the mopani wood to allow for a Fulkien Tea and olive tree bonsai to be incorporated in the Penjing.

In order for the found piece of driftwood to be use horizontally and stand up...a wire and celluclay base was created and painted to match the driftood.

Beige gravel was added around the base to further obscure the added artifical celluclay base.

A Chinese wisteria plant is planted in the center of the driftwood to create a Sogetsu Ikebana, complete with a high, middle and low points.

Phase IV - Abstracts from Nature

Follow the progress of these sculptures on the Process Page

These three forms are the beginning of a new series of works that are abstract sculptures based on objects from nature - shells and leaves.

The finished piece is called Stalasso - which is Greek for 'Dripping Stone'...It stands 5 foot tall. The lamp frame will be covered with handmade paper very soon.
