About The Deckle Edge - The Deckle Edge is a site exploring the sculptural world of handmade paper light sculptures.

Paper has such a long history of being an ephemeral media that it evokes  primal emotions. It is my hope to create a totally unique body of work using a totally unique medium. All of my paper artwork is made of Abaca, Kozo, Unyru or Cotton paper pulp. The calligraphy is researched and is based on antique Mandarin styles. The paper is coated with a matte medium or Paverpol to harden the paper and make it long lasting. The Paper Light Sculptures are made from commercial colored papers and use only low wattage bulbs and the interiors are coated with flame retardant.

I hope that after looking at my work you will email me and arrange for a consultation to begin the process of creating your unique hand-made Paper Light Sculpture or photograph. My work is now available for purchase at Home Again on York Road in Baltimore MD.

My Light Sculptures can be seen on Saatchi Online, Corriecroft.com, Digital Consciousness, Absolutearts.com, Creativeurope.com, Anioman.com, and Maryland Art Place.

I am conducting  paper sculpture workshops. Those looking for paper light sculpture Workshops in the Baltimore/ Washington area  -  Fall Workshop schedules will be published soon at Plaza Art Center in Towson, MD.

Company history

The Deckle Edge was started in 2005 after Dick D'Agostino returned to Baltimore after an extensive career in New York, Alexandria, VA and New Hampshire. Dick was Design Director of the Baltimore Sun for ten years in the eighties. He was electronic publishing manager for National Geographic, Madison Square Garden, Cablevision, and was a strategic management consultant with Fujitsu Consulting serving Fortune 500 companies.

Dick return to sculpture with hand-made paper as the media of choice. He was eager to explore the use of paper in three dimensional forms. Dick has developed a number of new techniques and is still exploring the limits of this media. He is eager to create sculptures that are translucent and have little or no internal structures or armatures.

He is presently creating paper light sculptures using Paverpol hardener from the Netherlands. He is a Certified Paverpol Instructor/Mentor and is offering paper sculpture workshops at Plaza Art Center in Towson, MD.

Please check out the Process page often as new works are added while in progress. Dick is eager to share his process and would love to have you sign up for one of his paper sculpture Workshops. This fall, Dick will present a workshop creating a paper Sogetsu Ikebana.

Plus, there are Photos of the Week that usually represent photographic weekend adventures. A more comprehensive collection of Dick's photography can be seen on Flickr.com and SnapVillage.
